The Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program coordinated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality provides summer internship opportunities in Texas for college students pursuing environmental, science, engineering, public administration, public health, computer technology, accounting, business, law, and communications degrees. The program works with public and private sectors across the state to develop a diversified workforce by creating opportunities for employers to mentor college students as paid interns.

The internships generally take place during the summer from May to August. Last year the MLEIP placed 86 interns with the TCEQ and 14 with other state agencies and private-sector companies. However, there are more qualified students applying for internships than there are sponsors where they can be placed.

Over the life of the program, the MLEIP intern program has placed more than 2,000 students providing them with hands-on, real-world work experience. Many former interns have gone on to secure jobs with their internship sponsors. Though the program has many committed sponsors, there is room for many more to place all the qualified students who apply.

Juanita Baldwin, SHRM-CP, PHR, MLEIP internship coordinator says, “The talent pool of qualified students is impressive. The sponsoring businesses and agencies taking advantage of the program get focused, dedicated workers for the summer who can then go on to make exceptional employees once they graduate.”

All types of organizations may sponsor a summer intern through the MLEIP. Sponsors who participate are asked to provide internship placements and compensate the students. Sponsors set internship dates, rate of pay, and hours for the interns.

The internship program honors the late U.S. Congressman Mickey Leland's efforts to promote a clean and healthy environment.
